Samuel van Vuuren is a composer and music technologist whose work moves between notated chamber music and sound made with software of his own design. Raised in Slovakia — where he attended Slovak public school through the eighth grade — and a dual citizen of the United States and South Africa, he graduated summa cum laude from Wheaton College (IL) in 2026 with a B.M. in Music Composition and a B.S. in Computer Science.
His concert music centers on chamber forces and voices: "Scaling Veiled Mountains," an eighteen-minute, three-movement cycle for flute and string quartet, draws on the mountain landscapes of his childhood; "Kráľ Času," for eleven players with organ, and the choral work "Hope for a Tree" were premiered at Wheaton in 2026, alongside the brass quintet "Dawn." His art songs set texts by Claude McKay and Amari Johnson.
As a technologist he builds his own instruments, including a spectral-analysis-driven granular synthesizer (extending Tim McDunn's synthesis engine) whose sound-world anchors "Depths," a work in progress for cello and electronics with live cues in SuperCollider. He works professionally as a software engineer on open-source AI language technology used by translators worldwide, and serves as a live broadcast mixer for orchestral and choral services. He directed the music program of a summer camp serving Roma communities in eastern Slovakia across six summers.
